Welcome to
The Hemlock Pain Center!
Just as our famous hemlock trees symbolize resilience and thriving amid harsh environments and situations, we at The Hemlock Pain Center find it deeply rewarding to guide our patients through the challenges and obstacles presented by painful conditions. Our Board-certified anesthesiologists and pain management specialists, Drs. Stephen N. Tafor and Sandeep Datta focus their practice on treating chronic pain. When you do something often enough, you tend to get very good at it. Additionally, due to our specialist expertise and capabilities, we are equipped to provide more advanced solutions than what your general physician or family doctor in Macon, Georgia, is able to offer, though we partner with both primary care providers as well as other specialists as a referral-based facility. And, with three other offices in Warner Robins, Dublin, and Milledgeville, there is certain to be an answer to your chronic pain close by.
Services to stop the hurting, so you can start living!
Once we have received and evaluated your referral, we may see you in just one week, not in months, as is the case at other specialty care clinics. In fact, we accommodate emergent or severe cases the same day. After our team has identified the source of your pain, we can customize interventions to resolve the underlying cause. Your treatment plan will be updated and adjusted as needed over time to ensure sustained pain relief. A few of the ways that we have helped patients overcome their pain and get back to feeling like themselves again include the following:
- The Intracept® procedure – A minimally invasive treatment for individuals with a specific type of persistent low back pain (vertebrogenic pain) that uses Radiofrequency (RF) energy or radio waves to disrupt the pain signals transmitted from your spine to your brain
- Intervertebral Disc Augmentation – Our office uses innovative augmentation techniques to repair the interverbal discs that cushion the spine during movement. Chronic pain and other spinal issues can stem from damaged discs. This augmentation procedure involves applying tissue-compatible materials to the affected discs to enlarge and restore the structural integrity of the degenerated tissues.
- Spinal cord stimulation – SCS devices may be implanted in the body to manage severe pain, from chronic back pain to nerve damage and neuropathic pain. These devices deliver a low-level electrical current to stimulate targeted nerve fibers in the spinal cord, effectively disrupting the ability for pain signals to reach the brain. It may be appropriate when other interventions have not worked.
- SI Joint Stabilization/Fusion – The sacroiliac joints (SI joints) connect the lower spine and pelvis. Injury, arthritis, pregnancy, and infections can cause SI joint issues, often characterized by pain and stiffness in the lower back and backside, a condition known as sacroiliitis. Techniques to ease pain and improve range of motion include exercises that help stabilize the joint, injections, and even minimally invasive joint fusion surgeries.
- Intrathecal pump – Also known as a “pain pump,” this surgically implanted device delivers medication directly to the spinal cord and nerves. The medication helps to control pain and abnormal contractions associated with muscle spasticity. By bypassing the digestive system, this approach to treatment is known to be far more effective than oral medications or pills taken by mouth.
- Peripheral nerve stimulators – PNS are not any one thing, but rather a collection of medical devices designed to manage chronic pain. The “magic” behind these devices is the use of therapeutic, mild electrical impulses. Such stimulation disrupts the pain signals, so they do not have an opportunity to reach the brain. This effectively modifies the peripheral nervous system’s response to pain.
We take an interdisciplinary approach to pain management by also partnering with some of the top surgeons in Georgia to deliver optimal care as your needs evolve and as appropriate.
