Alleviating your pain is our specialty. The Hemlock Pain Center is led by board-certified anesthesiologists and pain management specialists, Drs Stephen N. Tafor and Sandeep Datta. As a specialty practice with offices in Macon, Milledgeville, Dublin, and Warner Robbins, Georgia, we take a special interest in and have considerable experience treating chronic pain. Specialty centers also invest in the latest technologies to accurately diagnose the underlying source of your pain, which then informs our advanced treatments that provide long-term relief.

What do you mean by chronic pain?

The National Institutes of Health reports that around 20% of adults in the U.S. suffer from chronic pain. This condition is defined as pain that occurs daily (or most days) for at least three months. Such pain can cast a long shadow over your life, affecting your mood, job, relationships, and overall quality of life. Patients who are referred to us often also have difficulty taking care of themselves or engaging in activities they love due to the pain, which may be accompanied by frequent nausea and vomiting, extreme fatigue, dizziness, problems falling and staying asleep, and hypersensitivity to noises, smells, and touch.

What types of chronic pain do you treat?

This persistent, often unrelenting pain is not limited to certain organs, systems, or structures of the body. It can affect any part of the body. We commonly treat individuals who have struggled with lower back and neck pain. However, it is not uncommon for other doctors to refer their patients with isolated limb or tailbone pain to us. These symptoms are often tied to conditions ranging from bulging discs to arthritis and spinal stenosis.

What are some ways I can manage my pain without in-office treatments?

Modifications to your lifestyle are often the first line of defense when keeping pain in check. Additionally, to support your long-term health and comfort, these changes are frequently incorporated into aftercare following the treatments available at our offices. Being overweight or obese is associated with myriad medical conditions, including an increased risk of developing chronic pain. Consider how losing just one pound can lift approximately five pounds of extra stress from your knees.

In addition to sound, healthy weight loss, special exercises and stretches may be recommended. These exercises are appropriate for your situation. Physical activity helps reduce pain sensitivity, inflammation, and stiffness by building muscle strength and flexibility. Also, deep breathing and mindfulness techniques can have a positive effect by easing muscle tension.

What types of treatments do you offer?

Radicular pain refers to symptoms that affect the root of a spinal nerve. Radiculopathy refers to those conditions that cause spinal nerve root pain. They include herniated discs, trauma, bone spurs, and the aging process and natural degeneration – basically, anything that compresses or irritates the nerve roots of the spine can result in radiculopathy.

Often, these patients can benefit from epidural steroid injections. A type of nerve block, these injections are applied to the sheath that surrounds the affected nerve root. Once injected, this medicine reduces irritation and inflammation to improve the severity and frequency of pain. Some patients with arthritis of the facet joints that connect the vertebrae or bones of the spine benefit from therapeutic facet joint blocks or radiofrequency ablation. The former treatment involves injecting a numbing medicine to ease inflammation and pain, while the latter uses RF energy (radio waves) to disrupt the medial branch nerve. So, pain signals cannot be transmitted from the damaged facet joint to the brain.

Will I need surgery?

For severe pain that has not improved through other interventions, we partner with some of the state’s top surgeons. Additionally, our state-of-the-art technologies support real and lasting relief from even the most challenging back and limb pain; for instance, with neuromodulation, The Hemlock Pain Center team can directly stimulate specific portions of the spinal cord to treat severe, chronic pain without surgery.
