Living with chronic pain can feel exhausting. It affects your work, relationships, and daily life. If you’ve tried medications, injections, or therapy without relief, there is hope. Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS) is a modern approach that can help you regain control and comfort.
At The Hemlock Pain Center, we specialize in advanced pain management techniques to provide lasting relief. Visit any of our offices in Macon, Warner Robins, Dublin, and Milledgeville, Georgia, to reclaim the painless lifestyle you deserve.
Here are commonly asked questions you may want to know about PNS:
PNS is a treatment that targets specific nerves causing your pain. Small electrical impulses are delivered to the nerve to block or modify pain signals from reaching your brain. This can reduce or even stop your chronic pain in certain areas. It’s a minimally invasive option designed to give you relief without major surgery.
PNS doesn’t require extensive surgery. It’s administered through a needle puncture of the skin. The procedure takes about 20 minutes. And since it’s minimally invasive, you can go home the same day.
On the day of your procedure, we’ll begin by taking X-rays of the treatment area to ensure precision. We’ll keep you comfortable during treatment by applying a topical numbing cream. Once the area is fully numb, your Macon pain specialist will carefully place a thin, wire-like electrode near the target nerve. This electrode connects to a small peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) device. The doctor will then test the setup to make sure everything is working correctly. During this test, you may experience a light tingling sensation, indicating that the system is functioning as it should.
After the procedure, you’ll have thin wires on the outside of your skin near the treatment area. Your doctor will cover them with sterile bandages to keep them clean and secure. Before you leave, we’ll give you a PNS device, which is the size of a cell phone. You’ll be able to control the amount of electrical stimulation and turn the device off as needed.
PNS is often used for chronic pain in the arms, legs, shoulders, and back. It can help people with neuropathic pain, post-surgical pain, or nerve injuries. If medications or conventional treatments haven’t worked, PNS may be a viable option. The Hemlock Pain Center carefully evaluates each patient to ensure PNS is the right treatment.
The results are life-changing. PNS can dramatically reduce pain and improve quality of life. Many patients report less dependence on medications and better sleep. Every day activities become easier, and you can enjoy life again.
It’s worth noting that the PNS procedure is temporary. It lasts 60 days. If pain persists, we may recommend advanced procedures like spinal cord stimulation.
Most people experience no side effects from the PNS procedure. However, there’s a chance of infection, but our team takes the necessary precautions to minimize this risk. Injury can also happen to nearby nerves or structures. That’s why imaging is vital for precise guidance when implanting the wires.
Chronic pain can feel overwhelming, but some options work. Peripheral Nerve Stimulation is one of the most promising treatments for patients who haven’t found relief elsewhere. With the expertise of The Hemlock Pain Center, you have access to advanced techniques, personalized care, and real hope for a life without pain.
