If you have pain and stiffness in the buttocks or lower back that may go down one or both legs, sacroiliitis may be to blame. You may benefit from SI joint stabilization performed by the talented and experienced board-certified anesthesiologists and pain medicine specialists at The Hemlock Pain Center – Drs Stephen N. Tafor and Sandeep Datta.

What is sacroiliitis?

The patients that we have treated with sacroiliitis from our offices in Macon, Warner Robins, Dublin, and Milledgeville, Georgia, often describe pain that also affects areas such as the groin and feet. While symptoms may improve with movement, certain behaviors or activities can worsen the pain. They include:

  • Prolonged bed rest or sitting
  • Standing for lengthy periods of time
  • Placing more weight on one leg
  • Climbing stairs
  • Running
  • Taking large steps in a forward motion

The name sacroiliitis provides clues to the source of this pain—the sacroiliac (SI) joints, which are located where the lower spine and pelvis come together.

What causes sacroiliitis?

These joints may become “overstressed” due to degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis. Sudden impacts from car accidents or falls can also injure and damage the joints. Changes in the body due to pregnancy and childbirth may affect the joints, too, and cause pain and swelling.

How does SI joint stabilization help?

A surgical fusion procedure may stabilize the SI joint. This treatment involves using bone grafts and implants to fuse the pelvis and spine, effectively stabilizing the area to reduce the stress placed on the SI joint. By lifting the pressure, patients experience improved comfort, function, and reduced inflammation and swelling.

How is this surgery performed?

The Hemlock Pain Center performs SI joint fusion under general anesthesia. As a minimally invasive procedure, our specialists make only a small incision below the waist and just above the buttocks. Depending on the area to be treated, this opening may be made to the left or right of your spine. We will then use special tools and techniques to place the graft/material/implant through the incision. The introduction of this material or device promotes bone growth.

What is recovery like?

No two experiences are the same. You can support a predictable and fast recovery by following any instructions provided by our team and by maintaining follow-up visits. We may also refer you to a physical therapist. PT can play an important role in the healing process. Specialized exercises help to improve the muscular dysfunction that may persist even after an immediate reduction in your pain following surgery. It is also important to note that physical therapy is often the first line of defense when treating sacroiliitis or SI joint disorders. When stretching and strengthening exercises and medications fail to relieve the pain, we may recommend other interventions, including joint fusion.
